Watch: Israel ‘shoots down drone’ at sea with Iron Dome missiles for first time

Ship-mounted defence system was used to bring down a ‘suspicious aerial target’ near Eilat in the south of Israel, the IDF says

Israel has shot down a drone using its ship-mounted Iron Dome system for the first time, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported.
The naval version of Israel’s missile defence system intercepted a “suspicious aerial target” near the southern city of Eilat shortly before midnight on Monday, the military said.
Sirens sounded in Eilat when an object, believed to be a drone, entered Israeli airspace, the IDF said. Footage of the incident posted on social media appeared to show Israeli missiles intercepting a drone, causing it to burst into flames in the sky.
The advanced model of the Iron Dome, known as C-Dome, is operated by the Israeli Navy’s four Sa’ar 6-class corvette ships and is capable of downing rockets, cruise missiles, and drones, Israel’s defence ministry reported. It was brought into service in Nov 2022.
The suspected drone flew in from the east, the IDF reported, with local media suggesting it could have been launched from Iraq.
